Rich & I adopted Shamus (re-named "Seamus", same pronunciation) on Friday,
March 13th from Friends of Cats, a no-kill shelter in Lakeside, just outside of San Diego. We are so happy with him in our
lives. He is just the sweetest, prettiest, most good-natured and
even-tempered cat we've ever met.
He's around 3 years old. He readily gives up his belly for rubs,
accepts kisses on his nose, and even lets me play with his feet! He
settled in and made himself at home almost immediately. Went all around
the house, looking out the windows, purring to himself. We can't believe
this dollface had to wait nearly 8 months at the shelter before someone took him home!
He must have been waiting for us....
Saturday and Sunday went smoothly, getting used to
routine... Saturday morning, he saw a group of deer outside - probably
the biggest critters he ever saw in his life! My mother came to visit on
Sunday, and he was totally nonplussed with the stranger in the house.
Rich took him outside for a few minutes, and he was ecstatic. On Tuesday, he caught his first mouse - in the house! Killed it by the next day. We praised and petted and praised him up and down for it. He was VERY pleased with himself. Last weekend we let him go outside (with one of us chaperoning him) and explore his new territory. Anytime he wandered close to the edge of the property, we'd call him back, and he'd trot back. He's very smart. Today, he climbed a tree. We're not going to let him go out at night, ever. And not during the day unless we're there - at least for the first few weeks. He's also a good cat to sleep with - curls up quite unobtrusively next to you, not like Kabuki who'd sleep on your face if you let him.
From the site:
"Welcome to What Jeff Killed, your authoritative source for news and information about Jeff The Giant Orange Cat and his favorite pastime: killing things.
Jeff is a large orange tomcat that lives and kills in Shadow Hills, CA.
Jeff has adopted our back porch and yard as his home. He uses our dog's house when it rains, but mostly he likes to sleep on our patio chairs and keep watch over his domain.
Though he doesn't really belong to us, we provide Jeff with food and water; however, this does little to lessen his killer instinct. To humans, Jeff is an exceptionally good-tempered and friendly cat; to rodents and other small animals, he is death itself.
It could be that Jeff likes to bring us gifts to repay our hospitality. Perhaps he is simply a hardwired killing machine. All we know for certain is that he hunts down a wide variety of small animals and disembowels, decapitates, and dines on them. Often."

- Sander, my childhood dog. I got him when I was three. He was half dauschund, half cocker spaniel. He died of cancer a couple years after I left for college, so he had a long life. - Various hamsters and fish - A snow-white angora rabbit with blue eyes, named Frankie. Angora rabbits don't usually live very long because of their fur. You have to keep it trimmed short or it becomes a nightmare. Also they get hairballs. When, after two operations, he got a third one, I had him put down. - A pair of cats that I inherited while in college, and couldn't really take proper care of. I took them to a shelter after a few months. - TS Eliot, a black cat with green eyes. I adopted him from a rescue person as a kitten. He was my heart. I loved that cat so much. We had 9 years together. He disappeared last April. I still miss and think of him. He was just starting to learn mousing. He used to go on hikes with us, following behind like a puppy. He loved to drink from the faucets - his favorite was when I'd let him drink from the hose. - Kabuki, a black & white cat with ice-blue/green eyes. He's our mouser. I got him from the same person about a year & a half after TS. He's about 7-1/2 now. He really loves being the only cat in the house now. Rich & I are his only friends. We figure he's eaten more than a thousand mice in the 2 years we've been in the mountains. He just recently tangled with a racoon, got a scratch that got infected, and had to have surgery. We hope he learned a lesson about racoons. He'll attack a dog 5 times his size if one wanders onto his territory. We've also caught him messing with snakes - yikes. He's the closest we'll have to having children.
